Employee Working from Anywhere…Compliance Issues That Must Be Resolved

Recorded Webinar | Vicki M. Lambert | All Days

Description

Working from home has become the new norm for many workers. Even before COVID-19 forced businesses to send their employees home, around 4 million employees worked remotely for at least half of the week. Even now, with the country slowly returning to normal, many companies are allowing those workers who wish to stay remote to do so either part-time or full-time.

The pandemic has created a variety of compliance challenges for companies. This includes employees working remotely to new and constantly changing regulatory and statutory requirements such as vaccination and paid leave mandates. As they work to understand these changes and help their clients through a new compliance landscape, these challenges place accounting firms—particularly owners and decision-makers—in the hot seat.

Remote work has many benefits for companies, including access to a broader employee talent pool (regardless of location), reduced employee turnover, and cost savings. Many workers, forced to work from home for the first time due to the pandemic, found advantages, but working from home can also mean dealing with some significant compliance requirements. These can impact everything from business taxes to workers' compensation. Unfortunately, such considerations are sometimes a surprise to employers who don't have an HR department or lack an understanding of the implications of having remote employees.

Session Highlights:

  • The webinar will review state income tax withholding requirements for employees working from anywhere.
  • The speaker will discuss Local tax issues.
  • Learning who gets the state unemployment insurance for hybrid workers.
  • Understanding which wage and hour laws apply when employees work from anywhere.
  • Dealing with wage-hour or tax laws changes if the employee enters the "office" once a week, month, or quarter.
  • Considering which sick pay laws apply to hybrid employees.
  • Dealing with what compliance issues arise concerning child support and creditor garnishments.
  • Maintaining travel pays issues for hybrid employees.

Why Should You Attend:

21st technology allowed us to work from anywhere during the pandemic and will continue to allow employees and employers the freedom to work from anywhere. Unfortunately, as we end the pandemic's major upheaval and start to settle into the new normal of office life, the compliance issues are not as easy to address as the technology ones were at the beginning. Overtime rules, minimum wage rates, permitted deductions from paychecks, and even paystub requirements are governed by where the employee physically performs the work. The same applies to garnishments for child support and creditors. Payroll must determine all these compliance issues at the age where employees can work from anywhere.
